On Domestic Spying…

I was reading Chomsky the other day and today I read this:

A federal judge has resigned from a special court in protest over President George W. Bush’s secret authorization of a countrywide warrantless domestic spying program, the Washington Post reported yesterday.

The action by US District Judge James Robertson stemmed from deep concern that the surveillance program that Bush authorized was legally questionable and may have tainted the work of the court that Robertson resigned from, the newspaper said.

Still fresh in my mind what Chomsky’s wrote about ‘democracy’ and ‘propaganda’ (that it’s important for the citizens not to organize or to discuss the situation they’re in), I can see a parallel here because this can be perfectly accomplished by spying on them.

The fun thing is, you don’t even really have to spy on them. They’ll be scared shitless to say anything over the Internet, land-lines, or whatever.

Domestic spying programs do keep the citizens in check and thus protect the system called ‘democracy’.

In effect, this will cause people to only think what they feel and not ‘vent’ their thoughts and emotions through speech or books; thus again taking the ’spectator’ role that Noam Chomsky describes. Such a person will think he is probably the only one with those thoughts, consider himself alone and an outsider and won’t give it any more mind…

as long as we keep blogging along these lines, and build easier tools to encourage others to step up and share their voice, it won’t matter how many threats of wiretaps are pushed out there. pretty soon, there won’t be a discernable difference between “us and them” as that judge proved by resigning.
