Google directly competing with Microsoft?

So, although they wouldn’t want the hassle of making hardware, Google apparently does seem busy to prep a fork of Ubuntu:

Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software. A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as ‘Goobuntu’.

Although this is still an internal initiative, I’m curious to see where this might lead… One definite pro will be that this Next Big Evil Thingâ„¢ will be open source, so it can’t be that evil. ;)

I’d rather they work on Google Earth for Linux ffs! :P
