So, I just arrived at home. I start early so I’m home relatively early than most people. I booted the laptop and while perusing some web-sites some guy rang my doorbell. I open the door and the guy introduces himself.
He explains he works for a company that wants to promote their home-security system. And, the street I live in, happened to be eligible for a ‘free’ installation.
Call me paranoid but, somehow, I don’t think I’m up for that. I believe that security doesn’t mean a thing if the integrity of the system cannot be guaranteed.
Home security lesson nr. 1 should be to never put the integrity at risk by installing some ‘free’ product that some door-to-door salesman is trying to push.
In a pure hypothetical scenario, what if these people are in cahoots with the folks that regularly clean my windows, thus know there’s something interesting to be taken?
Sure, one could assume that the guys pushing this alert-system do not want any negative publicity so it’ll be for real, but you know what they say about assumptions… The company can have a good ‘image’ but that says nothing about its personnel.
Nah, in order to maintain my home’s integrity and effectively secure it, I should install a system myself and surely wouldn’t want anyone to know the specifics, how and where it’s installed, etcetera.
It’s like, basically allowing complete strangers to secure your home computer.
It all comes down to trust and when it comes down to door-to-door salesmen that promote some product, at a time on which typically only the non-working person is at home, well …
So I said “No” and he went on his way.
PS: While typing this I noticed he was quickly done talking at the neighbours as well. I wonder how many ‘greedy’ people will go for this ‘free’ product. Considering we’re Dutch people, seems pretty likely.

My girlfriend just came home and told me they incidentally discussed these people at work.
Apparently, the catch is the € 40 per month subscription…
