One third of Europeans lack basic computer skills

As reported by The Register yesterday, a third of the EU citizens lack basic computer skills:

Eurostat found that 37 per cent of people aged between 16 and 74 had no basic computer skills and were unable to complete tasks such as using a mouse to copy a file or folder.

I find the action of ‘copying a file using a mouse’ questionable in terms of determining somebody’s computer literacy, though. I know plenty of people who know how to ride a bike, but they still don’t know shit about the traffic laws and get run over almost every day.

Actually… I think that one third‘s pretty low. That is actually quite an impressive number; I expected that to be way higher.

I mean — 25 years ago people shunned these electronic machines. Hell, you were a geek or some social outcast if you used to spend some time behind it as a kid. Over the last decade, all the other people had to play ‘catch-up’ and, yay, they now too know how to copy a file… Using a mouse

But at some point I surely do expect these people to cause a serious accident.
